A Stylist Packs Your Suitcase

Ilaria Urbinati's No-Fail Guide to Looking Good on Vacation

packing for three-day getaways!

When you’re born in Rome, raised in Paris, and splitting your time between L.A. and NYC, you pick up if nothing else (well, besides a few languages and epic taste) how to pack light. Ilaria Urbinati, celebrity stylist (a.k.a. the reason Bradley Cooper always looks so dashing in a suit and ladies like Krysten Ritter and Emmy Rossum end up on best-dressed lists) and co-owner of Confederacy boutique, gives us her formula for maxistyle with minimum baggage.

Everything You Need for a Warm-Weather Three-Day Getaway

The Basics
3 pairs of socks
4 pairs of undies
2 bras (“I always stash one of my aunt Laura Urbinati’s bikinis — you can wear the top under tees.”)

The Pieces
1 white button-up (“You can wear it long over jean shorts, as a bathing suit cover, or tied over your shorts or chinos.”)
2 tank tops
2 tees (“The Proenza Schouler ones are the best. They’re even cute to sleep in.”)
1 pair of chinos (“There are a million good pairs at J.Crew right now.”)
1 pair of skinny jeans
1 pair of denim cutoffs (“I love Double RL Vintage or Current/Elliott.”)
1 pair of shorts (cotton or linen)
1 long dress (“I wear my Daughters of the Revolution Butterfly dress in the city, the country, daytime, or dinner. It’s good for everything.”)
1 skirt
1 short dress
1 jacket (“Boy by Band of Outsiders blazer or a leather jacket from ASOS — pick your battles.”)
1 long cardigan
1 pair of sandals or espadrilles
1 pair of ballet flats (“Gap makes great ones you can toss in your carry-on.”)
1 pair of nude heels (“They go with everything and make your legs look crazy long.”)

The Extras
1 straw hat (“I wore a BCBGeneration boater — minus the bead embellishment — during my wedding weekend.”)
1 pair of sunglasses
1 scarf
Bracelets (“Made Her Think cuffs always make the right statement.”)
1 pair of stud earrings
1 pair of gold hoops (“Necklaces aren’t practical; they just get tangled up.”)

The Beauty
1 toiletry bag (“A neutral Bare bag doubles as a clutch.”)
Facial cleansing pads
Tinted moisturizer with sunscreen
Mascara
Lip balm (“Dr Pepper Lip Smacker is heaven.”)
Blush
Blemish treatment (“Mario Badescu drying lotion never fails.”)
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Deodorant
Body lotion
Hair bands
1 scrunchie
1 headband
Shampoo and conditioner (“Nothing will ruin your weekend like a bad hair day.”)

The Baggage
1 day bag (“I don’t go anywhere without a Rebecca Minkoff M.A.C. Clutch.”)
1 nighttime clutch
1 large carryall
1 carry-on trolley (“I like to check my wheely bag and carry on the carryall — it’s faster to get through security this way, and the tote can double as a beach or grocery bag when you finally get where you’re going.”)

The Day Of
“The goal is to be comfy whilst looking put together and not bringing more stuff and getting through security fast — i.e., no belts, jewelry, or complicated shoes. I usually wear Raven skinny cargos for comfort, a nice (read: not sloppy) tee, and a cashmere sweater. I wear laceless Keds, so they’re easy to slip off at security. But you can still wear little hidden socks.”

Okay, so I'm over a month late on this, but seeing as how we have another 3 day weekend coming up, I was compelled to comment. And so while I find this list insane, I'm sure someone somewhere is reading their printout and screaming "WHERE THE HELL IS MY STRAW HAT?!" Because one person's 'crazy' is, well.... another person's 'crazy'.

This list is great!! I have always been one to pack more than to pack less!! The only thing I would add to this list is one of ExerciseTV's fabulous DVD's! I got mine at http://bit.ly/j5Jmyh When I travel I always make sure to have at least 1 so I can feel great on my vacation

scrunchies? come on! suggesting the same amount of bags as undies? who is this for?

$235 dollars for a tee shirt? Really? I stopped reading after seeing that.

Dear Daily Candy Editors and everyone, Please see a response to this ridiculous, too long, way over the top, way too expensive laundry list of things to pack on my blog: http://bhisarockstar.tumblr.com/post/5578403309/what-to-bring-on-a-warm-3-day-weekend-a-response-to

Are you kidding me? There must be a typo in the heading. With all those items, it should read "10" day trip. And even then, the list far too long! I was expecting to read some tips on how to pack wisely, not ridiculously.

Ridiculous. Clueless. Would all this crap even fit in the luggage allowance, or she that annoying person that fills up the overhead? And it is all so incredibly BORING! Heaven forbid if one of her suitcases --airline security would never believe someone could waste that much money on a tee shirt. I've known lots people who pack for 2 weeks in a backpack that fits in the overhead--avoiding the lines and never getting stuck on a layover without underwear, arriving chic with everything they need. A weekend? You should just wear most of it on the plane!

No skincare? Night cream, eye cream, sunscreen not just for the face?

This list is way too long!! There are WAY too many extras on here. There is no need for 5 tops, 2 pairs of pants, 1 pair of shorts and 2 dresses on a 3 day weekend. 3 shirts and 1 of everything else is enough. I have traveled very much, including many 3 day weekend getaways and I definitely only need half of this to survive very comfortably.

Who really considers this "light" packing for a long weekend? I'm a notoriously heavy packer and even I found this list a bit extensive.

I travel a lot and (trust me) this list is as foolproof as it gets. All the essentials with none of the unnecessary baggage. Thanks for the neat little checklist PDF!!

Have used Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker for 30+ years. Adds a bit of color, and keeps lips moist, not sticky. Caits, try it you'll like it. And for $2 - it's such a deal.

Lost me too!

She's single, right? or packing to be with her girlfriends? No guy would be happy to see that he gets to haul around that pile of junk for a long weekend.

Dailycandy editors. Are you serious? For three days? And keds? Scrunchies? Dr. Pepper lipsmacker? Really? You should be ashamed!

oh dear lord. she lost me at the $235 tee.
