A Night to Remember

The Loew's Jersey Theatre

Ah, the movies. Stale popcorn, countless commercials, sticky seats … all for less than $15.

They talk about the Golden Age of Hollywood. Was that when moviegoing was magical, transporting, and cathartic, not just a reason to not have to talk to your date?

Some advice: Travel back in time to the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre, one of the last remaining movie palaces. Opened in 1929, nearly demolished in 1986, and lovingly restored by volunteers, this grande dame of cinemas is all red velvet, gilt edges, and bygone-era opulence. Timeless touches include fresh popcorn, vintage previews, and a six-dollar ticket price.

Yeah, it’s in Jersey, but get over yourself. Getting there is easy. It’s just across the street from the Journal Square PATH station.

Movies are shown one weekend per month (cut Loew’s some slack. She’s an old lady!), and usually they’re feature themed revivals. This weekend it’s a Liza-Judy triple bill: The Clock, Caberet, and A Star Is Born.

Go. Be adventurous. See movies as they were meant to be seen.

That’s what being a real movie fan is all about.

Loew’s Jersey Theatre, 54 Journal Square, Jersey City, located across Kennedy Boulevard from the Journal Square PATH station. Directions and show times can be found at loewsjersey.org.
