It’s inevitable. The lazy, hazy days of summer (the beaches, the barbecues, the end-of-season sales) leave you feeling … guilty.
Enough already. You’re itching for some action.
Avoid the summer slump and volunteer with the Doe Fund (which has nothing to do with saving deer). One of the most worthy causes in the city, the agency helps the homeless and disadvantaged get back on their feet. The Ready, Willing & Able program provides housing, social services, and work for the homeless. (They are the guys in blue that are cleaning up your neighborhood.) Doe then helps program grads secure independent housing and jobs.
There are lots of creative ways to volunteer. You can teach job skills, conduct mock interviews, tutor in math or reading, or, of course, just donate some always needed money.
You might even call it a guilt-free pleasure.
