New Kids on the Block

Sound Art Charity

Ever since the unfortunate heyday of the boy band, kids have been dreaming of pop stardom.

Most figure all they need is hair gel and some jazzy moves to get on TRL. (Sadly, they may not be wrong.)

Help them raise their standards. Sound Art, a charity that helps turn ambitious minors into music mavens, works through schools in underserved areas of L.A. The organization hopes to teach responsibility, creativity, and self-esteem through study of the music biz. Participants tap their inner talent, master music theory, study production, and form bands that actually perform in small venues. With a board of directors that includes musicians, managers, producers, and even Samuel Goldwyn prez Meyer Gottlieb, Sound Art means business.

So what do they need from you? Old guitars, mics, and amps — or simply a donation. You may — or may not — help turn out the next American Idol …

But at least it’s sure to get kids n’sync.
