What: First weekend of largest state fair in the country. Rides, food, music, and more.
Why: Our fair state has a great state fair.
When: Begins Fri., 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Daily, thru Oct. 23.
Where: Fair Park, Grand Ave., at Robert B. Cullum Blvd. (214-565-9931).

Austin Grand Prix
What: Adults and teens battle it out in souped-up karts for cash prizes.
Why: Tiny cars = big fun.
When: Sat., 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m.; Sun., 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Where: Iron Rock Raceway, 10320 New Airport Dr., Austin (512-530-7223).

Sunday Night Film Series
What: Bring a blanket and picnic basket for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off under the stars.
Why: What’s better? Anyone? Anyone?
When: Sun. at 8 p.m. Gates open at 7 p.m.
Where: Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland Rd. (214-515-6521). Tickets are $6 for nonmembers, $4 for members.

Chinese Music Concert
What: Anita Hu plays traditional Chinese melodies on the 21-stringed zheng.
Why: You’ll get the zheng of it in no time.
