We’ve been hearing so much chatter about how Philadelphia is New York’s sixth borough.
To which we simply reply: You wish.
But Morimoto finally opens tomorrow — with great fanfare and big, sleek design to match. The legendary Japanese restaurant has been one of Philly’s best for years, which makes us late to the sushi table.
Blame the Olympic spirit, but we can’t help but think this opening is all about the competition: Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto vs. Iron Chef Mario Batali, in the Best Ginormo Restaurant on Tenth and 16th competition. (Will Buddakan prove the ultimate upset when it opens next month?) Morimoto vs. former mentor Nobu Matsuhisa for Gotham’s Best Black Miso Cod. Hotshot Philly restaurateur Stephen Starr vs. Himself in the If I Can Make It Here, I’ll Make It Anywhere race.
As for NYC vs. Philadelphia for Best Northeast Corridor Restaurant Town, well, we know where we’ll keep our money.
But, Philly, we’ve got our eye on you.
Morimoto, 88 Tenth Avenue, at 16th Street (212-989-8883).
