Best of 2006: Rise Up, Atlanta

Breadwinner Baking Company

It’s that time again — when we prepare to ring in the new by celebrating the best of the past year. So this week, we give you some of our favorite stories from 2006.

Apollonia had Prince. Ferrell had SNL. You had that rusted ghetto trampoline in your parents’ backyard.

Every highflier needs a proper launching pad.

So be it, then, that Wendy Melkonian, co-owner of new baking business Breadwinner, got her start at West Buckhead’s Souper Jenny, the spot known for launching successful spin-offs (see last summer’s Metrofresh frenzy). The rising food star’s hearty, fresh-baked loaves are still available at the famed soup shop, but now Wendy, her brother Geoff, and her sister-in-law Katie are taking custom orders.

Breadwinner recipes run for an entire season at Souper Jenny, so you can try slices there before committing to a whole loaf. Flavors like Better Than a Bubble Bath Mocha Chocolate Chip are rich enough to pair with morning coffee but not too sugary to maul alone. (Read: zero post-brownie guilt.)

Loaves of everything from Party at My Place Pumpkin to Be Still My Beating Tart Lemon Blueberry are just a quick phone call — or a hop, skip, and jump — away.

No trampoline required.
