Balenciaga’s space-age wedges. Prada’s rainbow platforms. Versace’s bitch boots. This season, it’s all about structural height.
Get even higher at Skylon, which opened for lunch and dinner yesterday inside the newly revamped (the job cost £91m, to be precise) Royal Festival Hall. Taking its cues from the building’s ’50s modernist origins, the restaurant from D&D London (formerly Conran) has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking London’s skyline and the Thames.
The seasonal European menu from Helena Puolakka (ex-Harvey Nichols Fifth Floor Restaurant) offers dishes like poached Dorset lobster or wild salmon with watercress cream, chased by crispy Braeburn apple parcels with vanilla rice pudding and Calvados sauce. Eat in the casual grill room or formal dining room, or perch at the spectacular raised bar for finger food and cocktails.
You’ll be so high, you’ll happily kick off those heels.
Skylon, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX (020 7654 7800 or skylonrestaurant.co.uk).
