The Pleasure Excursion

The Picnic Club Debuts

“How to Practice Safe Picnicking” (according to The Picnic Club, a new grassroots, not-for-profit society for people who like to share prepared foods in idyllic outdoor spaces)

1. Delay activity until you and your lunch partners are physically/emotionally prepared to swap side dishes.

2. Find a nice grassy spot in the shade. Watch where you sit.

3. Always use a blanket.

4. When sharing (quiche, potato salad, coleslaw), glass containers are better than Tupperware (for fear of “molecular infusion of plastic into food left out in sun for too long”).

5. Regarding relishes, chutneys, and dressings: Avoid double-dipping unless agreed upon by all. Wash your hands before indulging in finger foods.

6. Love cooked meats? Don’t forget condiments.

7. If engaging in high-risk behaviors (flag football, full-contact Duck, Duck, Goose), move away from lounge area (and young children).

8. Once you show up, you’re a member. There’s no going back.

The Picnic Club will finally meet (after many soggy Sundays) at the southeast corner of Sheep Meadow, Central Park, Sunday, 1 p.m. For more information, go to thepicnicclubnyc.blogspot.com.
