Spring 2009 Green Guide

Miami’s been slow in its efforts to save the environment (unless you count the switch from silicone to saline). DailyCandy has a few more grounded green ideas.

Veg Out
Local organization Treemendous Miami plants trees to make the city a healthier, more oxygenated place to live. Get in on the vegetative action this Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon, at Schenley Park, where they’ll be adding to the tree canopy. (Registration at 305-378-1863.)

Save Face
Keep toxins where they belong — in your pills. For your skin, stick to Futurenatural, which sells organic beauty products. Like a green Sephora, it has everything from honey soy milk shampoo to chemical-free eye makeup remover.

Drink Up
If you lined up the bottles consumed in one night on South Beach, they’d wrap around the earth twice (we guess). Lesson your boozeprint with Pommery champagne. The bubbly is made with sustainably farmed grapes and the packaging is lightweight — for less pollution with an equal buzz (W Wine Boutique, 1328 Alton Road, South Beach; 305-673-8282).

Shop Around
Support local stores (good for the environment and the economy). Imagine boutique sells tons of ecogoods, including Green Veranda purses made of recycled newspaper (3252 Northeast 1st Avenue, Midtown; 305-704-8246). The founder, who lives in Hallandale Beach, supports fair trade, plants a tree for every purchase, and donates a portion of profits to charity.

Go for the Kill
Not all critters should be saved. When getting rid of bugs (termites, ew), do so gently with Orange Pest Control. The local company handles insects (and weeds) using organic and nontoxic options.

And recycle, ya boob.
