Let Them Eat Cake: A Fancy Birthday Bash

How to throw a glittery party

When Rachelle Schwartz, one of the creative forces behind Wiley Valentine, an online outpost for letterpress stationery and gifts, shared her daughter’s birthday party invite, we knew we needed more. More pink. More sparkle. And more fancy.

Tell us about the party.
The theme was A Fancy Afternoon. The color palette was originally neon pink with pops of gold, however, shortly after sending out the invitations, Piper decided her favorite color was blue. And not just any blue, but aqua blue. So I added hints of that as well.

As guests walked in, they were asked to get fancy. There were necklaces (I painted wooden beads and threaded them onto neon pink string I found at the hardware store), crochet crown rings, and glitter bracelets (from Old Navy) displayed on tiered cake plates.

I created little picnic areas on the lawn. On each blanket were coloring books and jars of crayons for the kids. There was a tattoo bar where guests could adorn themselves with Piper-themed tattoos that I designed and printed onto tattoo paper.

The photo booth was a huge hit. Piper wore a crochet crown for the occasion. Guests were encouraged to dress up with accessories (boas, glasses, necklaces, etc.). Then they stood in front of the gold Drop It Modern backdrop and, voila, instant fanciness.
