They say history repeats itself. Better hope that doesn’t apply to some of your childhood fashion fads (this goes out to you, pinned jeans).
Pass on the best of the past with Waanaki. The new online shop sells vintage kids’ clothing and accessories from the 1950s to the 1990s in quality fabrics and bold patterns that never lose their appeal. Stock changes every four weeks and is tailored to boys and girls from newborn to age 6.
Shopkeeper Nanette Sullano combs estate sales and flea markets to gather the goods; sources across the United States, Europe, and Asia feed her vintage gems. When we browsed, we spied a ’70s square-neck dress in a Piet Mondrian-like geometric pattern, a dapper pair of leather-and-velvet spectator shoes from the ’60s, and French red-frame sunglasses from the ’30s.
In addition to worldly fashions, a small selection of housewares (hand-loomed play mats, fair trade jute baskets) and nostalgic toys (wooden tops and whistles) means there are always fun surprises in store.
Just call it a comeback.
