Mother's Helper: Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood

A new TV show you'll feel good about

Whoever decided television was bad for toddlers never had a 3-year-old hanging off their leg while trying to get dressed.

They also hadn’t seen Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, the latest show from The Fred Rogers Company and kiddie-TV guru Angela C. Santomero (Blue’s Clues, Super Why!). Inspired by the late, great Fred Rogers, it stars the animated offspring of characters from the iconic Mister Rogers Neighborhood.

This update picks up where Mr. Rogers left off — using research and child development learnings to inform each episode. Shows includes two eleven-minute segments that address a single social or emotional life lesson. The segments hang together with a memorable song that teaches kids how to manage that situation. The episode we watched dealt with disappointment, and our kids quickly adopted the refrain, “When something seems bad, turn it around and find something good.”

We can’t help but think that this thoughtfully crafted television, with generous pacing that allows kids to absorb and process the story, may actually be good for our brood.

After all: When something seems bad, turn it around and find something good.
