Be-Tween

‘Tween life certainly has its crosses to bear: loss of innocence, the threat of braces, and the awkwardness of being neither kid nor teen. And dressing? A veritable fashion no man’s land: OshKosh B’Gosh? Too childish. Marc Jacobs? Too mature.

So hats off to the newly opened Pixie Stix, where the clothing is just as sweet and colorful as its namesake. Against aqua-polka-dot walls hang pink crystal chandeliers and racks filled with brightly colored tees, terry jumpsuits, bathing suits, and tennis skirts from designers like Lilly Pulitzer and Flowers by Zoe. Young accessory hounds will revel in the shoe section (Ralph Lauren Polo Sport flip-flops and Kenneth Cole sandals) and at the tables filled with bright foam cell phone cases, Sugar Baby Fairy Lip Gloss, preppy belts, and beach hats.

And the prices are low enough that even a weekly allowance could cover an indulgence or two. So maybe, just maybe, tweendom isn’t so bad after all.

Unrequited crushes notwithstanding.
