In the Red

On the color wheel of emotions, you know that green means jealously. Yellow, friendship. Orange, happiness.

But ruby? Pure passion, baby. And you don’t need years working for Crayola to know it. Just step inside The Ruby Door — a tiny, crimson-splashed boutique off Charles Street — and you’ll get the picture.

Glittering charms pop out immediately — antique brooches, vintage rings, satin evening clutches — in a variety of colors (red is everywhere, even on the brightly painted front door). But what really radiates is the handmade jewelry by owner Tracey Weiss. Each of her pieces offers an unexpected surprise: bracelets strung with unusual stones, oversized necklaces that are jagged yet elegant, and spiral earrings that hang in twisted, curved patterns.

There’s not a drop of snobbery in the experience. In fact, Weiss is so down-to-earth, she’ll even custom-create pieces for you if you ask.

So it really is a rainbow of colors — with your very own pot of gold at the end.
