Slice of Life

Your third birthday party had a goofy clown and screaming toddlers. Your eighth had Chuck E. Cheese, roller skates, and, undoubtedly, more screaming. Your twelfth was a slumber party with a Ouija board and yet more screaming.

So what was all the noise really about? Probably the ice cream cake. You know: bright blue and pink. Swirly icing. Chocolate crumbs in the middle.

These days, you may not want to make a lot of noise about your age. Or, heck, maybe you do — and bless you. Either way, you don’t have to wait for your birthday to indulge in the cold stuff. Toscanini’s, arguably Boston’s best maker of gourmet ice cream, is now doling out single slices of its decadent ice cream cakes — designed for the more, er, mature palate. (No, that wasn’t a dig; it was a compliment.)

It’s all quite simple: a piece of fluffy cake, a layer of rich ganache, a slab of one of the many amazing, offbeat flavors of homemade ice cream (burnt caramel and cardamom), all topped off with whipped cream and sugar frosting.

It’s like a party in your mouth, and you’re the only one invited.

Almost puts the scream back in “ice scream.”
