Slice of Life

Do you hear it? That sound of wailing and gnashing of teeth is the collective misery of Jamaica Plain residents bemoaning the shuttering of Pizza Oggi, a takeout pizzeria that won a near cultish following after its opening two years ago.

But J.P.’s loss has become the whole city’s gain, since Oggi (rhymes with “dodgy”) recently opened a 40-seat restaurant downtown, serving the same piping-hot pies with inspired toppings. (The goat cheese with toasted almonds is divine.)

The whole deal is sealed with the crust, which is a bit buttery, a bit zesty, and has an impossibly delicious, flaky, melt-in-your-mouth consistency. (Owner Steve Welch refuses to release the secret, saying only that it has something to do with “sesame seeds and olive oil.”)

And unlike the old Oggi, the new outpost stays open for dinner, offering personal-size versions of its legendary pies along with pasta dishes and burgers. And loyal customers needn’t worry. Welch has plans for a new sit-down restaurant in J.P. as soon as he can find a space.

So all that gnashing can turn to noshing.
