Some things, this town just does not need.
Does Faneuil Hall really need another cart peddling schlock? Does Newbury Street really cry out for another temple to trend slavery? And is the South End really begging for one more cute but pricey bistro?
Negative all around.
But when it comes to true neighborhood hangouts, there’s no such thing as too many. Which is why this week’s opening of South End Buttery is such a welcome event.
Owners Andrew Barker and Richard Gordon (who lives a half block away) have tossed together an inviting little cafe (by The Niemitz Group, in fact) for gathering and chilling out all day long. Swing by in the a.m. for a breakfast sandwich over the paper and a mug of Equator Estates coffee. At lunch, grab a smoothie or a hearty bowl of chili, chased with a hit of walnut-marzipan Zotter chocolate from Austria.
And, really, is any neighborhood cafe complete without signature cupcakes? They have the Madison (vanilla with chocolate frosting), the Simon (chocolate with vanilla frosting), and the Harriet (carrot cake with cream cheese frosting).
The namesake of each? One of Gordon’s three dogs. Cute, huh? But it gets cuter: A percentage of all cupcake sales are donated to the MSPCA.
It doesn’t get much more South End than that.
South End Buttery, 314 Shawmut Avenue, South End (617-482-1015).
