Bad to the Bone

Everything old is new again.

Right now, is there any concept that’s less new?

Could someone please inform the legions of retro-obsessed designers that, though copying pieces thread-for-thread from the past decades may be cute, there’s nothing actually original about it?

Or else you could leave such statements to jewelry designer Jessica Cushman. She makes them (literally and figuratively) with her modern-day scrimshaw. Jessica learned the historic craft years ago from her father. She now inscribes funky, witty phrases onto pre-ban whale ivory (meaning recycled old pieces — nothing illegal here).

Her inspiration? Everything from movie quotes to New York graffiti. A tiny bit delicate and a lot badass, Cushman’s designs take something historic and made it hip — and heirloom-worthy.

Which is good. Because if retromania keeps up, your granddaughter will be asking for it in 30 years.
