Sweet Smell of Excess

They say less is more.

And when it comes to cloying floral perfumes, too-loud flower prints, and flowery adjectives, we happen to agree.

But flower arrangements? Depends. If you’re talking about crappy fillers, tacky plastic accessories, or anything in baby’s breath, um, yeah: Go with less.

But when it comes to the sophisticated, clean, and gorgeous arrangements from the South End’s Ilex, we’ll take more, more, more.

Which is why we’re thrilled there’s now a second Ilex location in Beacon Hill. The closet-size shop bursts with buds of almost every seasonal assortment, from friendly alstroemeria to elegant orchids. And they sell a fun selection of well-priced pret-a-porter bouquets (all under $30) — great for grabbing on the way to a housewarming or dinner party.

And even if you’re doing the minimalist thing, they’ll happily wrap the smallest of purchases in their signature chic style. So even a single inexpensive stem looks gift-worthy.

Just don’t stop in without picking a little something up for yourself, too.

Because you can’t have too much of a good thing.

Ilex, 15 Charles Street, Beacon Hill (617-973-0505 or ilexflowers.com).
