A Modern Miracle

Alchemist Opens

Every kid knew at least one guy who possessed the power of magic. He’d “get” your nose and pull quarters from behind your ears. (Too bad he isn’t still around now, when rent is due, eh?)

Magic is a little harder to come by these days, but it still exists. Case in point: Alchemist, the hip new haunt in Jamaica Plain.

Formerly Triple D’s, a gritty hangout pouring $2.50 Pabst, the site has undergone a miraculous transformation by owners Lyndon Fuller and Relena Erskine. Now, under lights salvaged from an old church, barkeeps shake up martinis with fresh-squeezed juices. Diners savor kicked-up comfort food like calamari with crumbly feta and peppers and Guinness-and-ice cream floats.

In a nod to the neighborhood, J.P. Licks roasts the coffee, while Sam Adams Brewery, a few blocks away, brews up the custom Alchemist Pale Ale.

Or, if you’re so inclined, you can still throw back Pabst for $2.50.

Just don’t get caught trying to dig change out of anyone’s ears.
