Operatic Society

Opera Boston Underground

You’ve seen every stage show that’s been to town: dancing lions, warbling witches, aging rockers who refuse to let go of the leather pants. But opera? You’d rather sit through the lion thing again.

We know: Watching buxom women in tights and Viking helmets Figaro-ing at imps with faux swords frightens us, too. Or it did until we heard about Opera Boston Underground.

Instead of performing in a drafty old theater, singers hit the Lizard Lounge, an adorable, divey rock club, where (sans costumes) they belt tunes by Kurt Weill (the composer who inspired Lou Reed, The Doors, and PJ Harvey).

For just $5, you can discover masterworks and a ton of cool singers who really know what they’re doing. All while wearing your favorite jeans and putting away a few microbrews.

Which sounds anything but scary.

Tonight, 7 p.m. More shows to follow in March and May. Lizard Lounge, 1667 Massachusetts Avenue, between Harvard and Porter Squares, Cambridge (617-451-3388 or operaboston.org).
