Revenge of the Book Eaters

smahty-pants!

In a city full of wicked-smaht kids, one would think reading and writing skills were handed out at the front door.

Sadly, not every child in town gets equal access to tutors, tools, and teachers, which is why 826 Boston is definitely a nonprofit worth talking about.

The national org started a local chapter this spring, sending volunteers into schools to run writing workshops. They’re opening a center in Roxbury this week where kids will be able to stop in for things like SAT prep and fun cartooning and bookmaking classes.

And 826 clearly has its head on straight: Tonight, they’re hosting a benefit called Revenge of the Book Eaters, where bands like Of Montreal, Mates of State, and Via Audio are performing. Even smarty-pants founder Dave Eggers will be on hand.

It’s a heartbreaking work of staggering genius.

Revenge of the Book Eaters, tonight, doors open at 6:30 p.m., Berklee Performance Center, 1140 Boylston Street, Back Bay (826boston.org). Tickets at 617-931-2000 or online at ticketmaster.com.
