The Time for Change Is Now
40 South Street

Some transformations (the she-male down the hall, Nicole Richie as a mom) are obvious to the naked eye. Others, like the one at 40 South Street, happen just out of view.
The old-school vintage shop in Jamaica Plain used to be called Gumshoe (the sign’s still there) and had such odd hours, it was near impossible to access. But with a fresh coat of paint and bit of reorganization, it’s now worth seeking out.
They’ve shaken up the goods by adding a fantastic (and permanent) selection of women’s clothing, giving girls their pick of snap-button shirts, hip-hugging cords, and colorful knits. Guys can find worn-out denim and faded leather coats in back.
The disheveled decor and crazy old posters look right at home, and the quirky staff (still there, still smiling) now have a few reliable hours.
And that’s a change worth voting for.
