Act Your Age
Atelier Salon Opens

You’re growns up, you’re growns up, and you’re growns up.
But it still took you ten years to move away from the ’rents.
Even an independent spirit can take time to fly the coop. Take Dean Mellen: The Newbury Street hair stylist was a fixture in one salon for seventeen years before opening his own spot, Atelier.
He and business partner Cindy Kenefick took over a tiny whitewashed room, fixed it up, and opened it last week. With just three stylist chairs, it’s a quiet little place you can call your own (and not share with, say, 30 strangers).
Mellen works magic trimming the perfect bang (side swept or severe), coloring chunks or tiny wisps, and giving one fierce blowout. And Kenefick has an eye for classic cuts.
They’re open on Sundays so you can even schedule a visit on your downtime.
Which would be the adult thing to do.
Atelier, 174 Newbury Street, 2nd floor, Back Bay (617-456-0006 or atelierboston.net).
