Vino Vidi Vici

Travessia Urban Winery

Think globally; act locally — that’s your boozing mantra.

And you’ll find the similarly enlightened at Travessia Urban Winery, which is bringing a taste of the Old World to a local hood.

Located in downtown New Bedford (crazy, right?), the vintner has been quietly making and selling its homegrown varietals since December. The guys behind it — who learned wine making in their native Portugal — source grapes locally from vineyards in Dartmouth and Westport. The magic happens inside their teeny store front.

They just released four whites: a sweet dessert variety, a vidal blanc, and two chardonnays (we’re partial to the unoaked chard, aged in a steel drum).

A rosé debuts next month, followed by a deep merlot this fall. And it’s no surprise that Travessia tastings are fun, laid back, and pretension free.

Seeing as it’s from around the way.
