Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Museum

Rare is the art museum that also sparks real estate envy, but this stunning, 15th-century Venetian-style palace almost overshadows the intimate collection amassed by local art patron Isabella Stewart Gardner. After you’ve basked in the year-round sunlight of the flower-filled courtyard, take your time in relishing the museum’s 2,500 paintings, sculptures, textiles, and furniture pieces. Remember the infamous 1990 robbery when thieves made out with thirteen paintings, including pieces from Rembrandt and Vermeer? Their empty frames still hang on the wall, a reminder of the crime’s unsolved status.
