Cheap Eats, Drinks, and Decor for a Party

Throw a Terrific Bash on a Budget

party time cheap thrills cocktails!

Dealing with taxes is black and white. Now’s the time for a soiree that won’t put you in the red.

Steal a few ideas from party-thrower extraordinaire and jewelry designer Meghan Lorenz for throwing a rager that looks like a million bucks even when you have none.

Drink Up
Lightbulb: You can make shmancy drinks without spending a bundle.
Proof: Sites like Liqurious and Through the Liquor Glass brim with recipes. Choose two drinks (one vodka based, one tequila based, for example), mix them in pitchers, and have guests serve themselves. Or make your party BYOB. Just provide a case of PBR or Tecate.

Chow Down
Lightbulb: Keep it simple. Lorenz believes you can get the same satisfying feeling from pizza, hot dogs, or cupcakes today as you did when you were 6.
Order in: Pizza Metro feeds an army on a dime — especially with its coupon page (for midsize parties, buy two large and get a free medium).

Hang Up
Lightbulb: For Lorenz, a party is not a party without fun decor. She gets inspiration for shapes, colors, and textures from Confetti System.
Find it: Doolin’s is her go-to for party gear. She shops the amazing variety of metallic fringe banners, streamers, cups, and plates. She also loves Dulcelandia’s pinatas and colorful Mexican candies.

Scheme a Theme
Lightbulb: People get into themes, even if they claim to hate them.
Wow factor: Last year Lorenz and a friend threw an epic Madonnarama birthday. They called it Night of 1,000 Madonnas, dressed up like Madge, and danced to the tunes from different decades. Copy her or try your luck on a masquerade, hat, mustache, or royal family party.

Dance Off
Lightbulb: A great playlist can make or break a party.
Your moves: Lorenz suggests a combination of ’80s, ’90s, rock, and pop. Play old CDs or use Last.fm. Spend a few bucks on an old trophy at a thrift store (any object — even an old record — will do), but otherwise, this is one shindig you can throw for free.
