A Chicago Bar Grows Up

Go Gaga for SmallBar's Big-Kid Food

smallbar chicago tomato jam!

It’s no coincidence that both children and frat boys covet tater tots and chicken tenders. But everyone’s gotta grow up sometime.

SmallBar is the newest big kid in town. The 8-year-old Chicago haunt has a new chef — Justin White (Soé Cafe, The Bristol) — and a flurry of cocktails to match.

White gives bar snacks the adult treatment, such as pumpkin seeds dusted with smoked paprika and crispy, straight-from-the-fryer fries (dip tip: Order a side of caramelized onion aioli). Share charred bread with tomato jam and cheese; farmer cheese is the tangy fruit’s ultimate smoky, creamy counterpart. And don’t forget about the burgers, poutine, and barbecue pulled pork.

Drinks go the classic route (Junipero Negroni, dark and stormy).

Just pray you get carded.
