Chicago's 2012 Health and Wellness Guide

Get Moving This Year

nomi spa chicago!

New Year’s resolutions are pressure cookers.

Ease into 2012 with a healthy diet of beauty, relaxation, and exercise. Here’s to the same old you — just better looking.

Beauty Mark
Wipe away last year’s grit with a facial from guru Amanda Peloquin (we waxed poetic about her back in 2009). She works her magic at just-opened B. a Salon on Armitage, using Darphin, a botanically based product line. Don’t miss the salon’s full waxing menu and cuts and colors from Sassoon-trained stylists, too.

Keep your paws clean with NoMI Spa’s new Paint Me Pretty Club, a weekly mani or mani/pedi service at a whopping 25 percent off. Each week, pick your Deborah Lippmann polish, then sit back and watch Gossip Girl, Modern Family, or Pan Am while your aesthetician gets to work. Top it off with NoMI Kitchen pastry chef Meg Galus’s light-as-air macarons.

At the Peninsula Spa, the future is now: The Ultimate Firming and Lifting Microderm facial, a luxe, 90-minute treatment, uses a high-tech contraption we can describe only as light therapy meets jumper cables meets spa treatment. Watch out, Lea Thompson — our skin is going back in time.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
So you packed on a few in 2011. Who cares? Get back in the groove with the Spa at Trump’s new TRX suspension training classes. Designed by Navy SEALs (this is no joke), the classes use gravity-leveraging suspension machines to build muscle and burn fat. Private sessions are also available. To book, call membership director Caroline Rawlings at 312-588-8126. Class schedule, Monday, 12:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m.

Jump-start the year by taking Pilates Center of Chicago’s 30-day challenge; $325 gets you one month of unlimited classes, three private Pilates sessions, and online tools and trackers. For something a wee more moderate, try one of the new classes (Zumba, circuit, and boot camp).

Easy to Swallow
We’re not afraid to say it: We suck at cleansing. But eating healthy we can do. First order of business is a cleanse box from Irv & Shelly’s Fresh Picks. Just sign up to see if you live in its delivery zone and prepare for a shipment of healthful veggies and fruits (ginger, chard, carrots, beets, kale, avocado).

For something sweet that won’t make you chubs, try one of JuiceRx’s new concoctions: Holiday Nog (made with raw cashews, nutmeg, and vanilla bean) or Gingerbread Milk (raw pecan milk with allspice and clove).
