Your last tailor ambushed you with her screamingly single grandson.
For a better fit, head to The Alterationist, Noble Square’s newest, quaintest tailor shop.
Youngin Mary VandeVoorde sewed her way through her hometown, Ann Arbor, before heading to Chicago to work as a fitter at Nordstrom and Macy’s Bridal Salon. Today, in her sunny space, she hems, mends denim, relines coats, tailors suits, and excels at bridal work (she has a penchant for detailed beading and pinning).
VandeVoorde understands the tiny tweaks that make a garment last. She does brilliant custom work, too (see the curtains in the above photo).
Alteration parties are coming soon: Take in an article of clothing in need, consult with the master herself, then mingle and sip wine with friends.
In the meantime, she’ll fix you up.
The Alterationist, 804 North Bishop Street, between Chicago Avenue and Fry Street (773-789-7396 or thealterationist.com).
