When customers at Ann Kienzle’s toy store, Play, asked how to best spend a day in Logan Square, she offered mostly eating and drinking options.
Then she had an epiphany: People prefer to buy stuff rather than be stuffed.
Now they can. Her new storefront, Shop 1021, opened this weekend.
Dark wood floors, exposed brick, and tin ceilings set a scene to spend hours browsing Kienzle’s well-curated curiosities.
Books of all kinds (Apartment Gardening, Campfire Cookery, Domino: the Book of Decorating, Chicago Folk), stationery (Spilled Ink Press does custom work at a desk in the corner), old-school candy, 80 Acres lotions, and contemporary office supplies look even sweeter merchandised atop a reclaimed wooden door balancing on two gleaming aluminum trash cans.
Rustic linens and blankets, Fred glassware, and Roost ceramics make lovely picnic gear.
There. You’ve worked up an appetite.
