Vintage Kitchenware at Martyn George

Culinary gems at a Design District shop

martyn george!

Those hysterical girls from old Beatles footage?

That’s how we feel about Johanna Lowe’s new kitchenware shop, Martyn George.

The British food stylist and collector’s appreciation for all things well made, beautiful, and historical comes from a childhood spent foraging through a local thrift shop where her mum volunteered.

Keenly edited, the store is a true gem. Items from Lowe’s attic in England mingle with small-town America flea finds. It’s easy to picture filling a robin’s-egg blue colander with just-picked cherries, mashing garlic with a wooden mortar and pestle, or balancing an elegant gateau on a crystal cake stand.

Vintage aprons hang from rustic bureaus; brightly colored serving spoons are hooked on a salvaged door; silver-plate flatware nestles beside gleaming copper pots and kettles. Everything — sturdy aged vessels, enamelware, watering cans — is in tip-top shape.

If only it were open eight days a week.
