Empower Refugee Girls with Heshima Kenya

Scarves that give back

heshima kenya tie-dye scarves!

Summer, though splendid, is a fairly indulgent season.

Tip the scales and do some good for Heshima Kenya.

The locally founded organization provides resources and support for separated or orphaned refugee girls and women from DR Congo, Rwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Burundi.

Initiatives like The Girl’s Empowerment Project help young women get back on their feet, a safe house provides shelter and support services, and The Maisha Collective educates women about business management and personal finance by employing them to craft stunning tie-dye scarves.

Visit Heshima’s Ravenswood storefront to pick one up. They’re light enough for late summer chills and large enough to wrap around multiple times in winter, with a natural palette that goes with just about everything.

Indulgent? Certainly.

But with proceeds going directly to the women, they’re infinitely more satisfying.

Available at Heshima Kenya, 4917 North Damen Avenue, at Ainslie Street; at etsy.com, $30-$38. For more information or to make a donation, go to heshimakenya.org.
