When TV personalities open restaurants, things can go awry (see: Guy Fieri).
Luckily, Alpana Singh has a recipe for success: The world-renowned sommelier and Check, Please host debuts The Boarding House Friday in River North.
The bold, multilevel space speaks to Singh’s passion for viticulture (the first-floor ceiling is covered entirely with wine glasses); executive chef Christian Gosselin (Sofitel) quells hunger pangs, marrying French taste and Midwest sensibility.
For a more casual experience, hang on the first and lower floors (a.k.a. bar and cellar), and clink glasses over shareable plates of cheese and charcuterie, mussels, pork tots, mini sandwiches, and lobster poutine. Private parties — and, eventually, wine classes taught by Singh herself — will occupy the second level.
Starting next week, catch the elevator to the third floor to drink in high ceilings, city views, and classic dishes (kale Caesar, seafood tower, bone-in pork chop, citrus-poached salmon).
It’ll only improve with age.
