When we’re not ogling Tim Mazurek’s beautifully shot photos, we’re giggling at his prose and drooling over his recipes. Below, we attempt to unlock Mazurek’s innermost secrets (sort of).

What do you love about your neighborhood?
I love everything about it! We live in the Frank Lloyd Wright historic district of Oak Park, and it is such a beautiful neighborhood for a stroll, especially in early summer when fireflies are everywhere.
Best of Oak Park?
Our farmers market is the best. Not only do we have amazing freshly fried donuts, we have live bluegrass music. It is a community gathering spot.
What’s the last thing you baked? (Was it any good?)
I made a cranberry walnut tart for Thanksgiving dessert. It is an Alice Waters recipe and one of my favorites. I served it with some homemade cognac ice cream. It was plenty good.
Top three cookbooks?
The Breakfast Book, by Marion Cunningham; Tartine, by Elisabeth Prueitt and Chad Robertson; Ripe and Tender, by Nigel Slater.
Chicago’s best-kept secret?
The bridge between platforms at the Ashland Green/Pink line station is one of my favorite places. It has the best view of the skyline and is a great place to wait for your train.
Green City Market? Whole Foods? Trader Joe’s? All three?
All three, plus more. I get cheese from Marion Street Cheese Market, animals (and other specialty products) from Publican Quality Meats, and bread from Floriole. Sometimes I feel like all I do is shop for food. It is European of me, non?
Five dream dinner party guests?
Angela Lansbury, Tavi Gevinson, Miranda July, Joan Didion, and Hillary Clinton — we’d talk about girl stuff.
Where else can we read your writing?
I am writing a column on obscure cookbooks for Saveur.
Best meal ever?
One was definitely my birthday dinner at Nopi in London. It was shortly after it opened, and the meal was phenomenal. But mostly I remember a really good energy in the room and fantastic service. They brought me three birthday desserts!
