Timeline of a Child More Talented than You (a.k.a. The Emily Moser Story)

Age 8: In an attempt to keep her happy and occupied during a semitraumatic move from Texas to Wisconsin, Moser’s mom teaches her embroidery.

10: Sews her own poodle skirt for the sock hop.

13-16: Makes origami, friendship bracelets, and more.

17: First constructs costumes for Lyric Opera while working for a small costume shop in Wisconsin.

19: Opens her first online shop.

25: Inspired by a trip to Berlin (she’s three-quarters German), launches Kissen Studio, a marketplace hawking colorful linen and silk pillows (Kissen = pillow in German).

She borrows cheeky, geometric patterns (boats, birds, pinwheels, paper airplanes) from her childhood origami books and layers shapes (diamonds, concentric circles) with help from an old Spirograph toy. Color blocks, stripes, and polka dots round out the collection. Rainbow hues (cherry, orange, yellow, and light blue; watermelon pink and green) brighten any space.

She sells hand-bound notebooks, too.

It’s about time.

Available at etsy.com, $9-$55.
