A West Coast-Style Boutique Comes to Town

Vintage and new meet at Tusk

What do a narwhal and a Logan Square boutique have in common?

Like the arctic mammal, Tusk — a shop neighboring Scofflaw on a lonely stretch of Armitage, opening Friday evening — is a rare breed. Owner Mary Eleanor Wallace hails from the South — though you’d swear she stepped straight out of Silver Lake. Her minimalist storefront, spilling with sunlight and smartly chosen wares, resonates unequivocal West Coast charm.

Wallace, a nurse by day, caught the collector’s itch early (her mom and grandma are antiques dealers). She chooses pieces based on material (silks, linens), shape (boxy tops, high-waisted pants), and print (polka dots, florals), and is refreshingly ambivalent about designer wear: We spotted a yellow Limited button-up, sleek DKNY dress, striped Esprit lounge pants, and Escada pumps.

Bent brass necklaces by Debbie Carlos dangle alongside Sarah Shikama’s statement jewelry; hand-pressed records from Positive Beat and a selection of esoteric lit (Laura) line the west wall. Up in the Air Somewhere (one of our favorite local ceramicists) designed the light fixtures.

Up next: one-off collaborations, menswear, curated Tusk mixtapes.

You’ll have a whale of a time.
