Stay Local with Knot & Splice Jewelry

Down-to-earth accessories made with all-American stone and metal

A quick road trip through your closet reveals moccasins from New Mexico, arrowheads from South Dakota, and a Pendleton pullover from Oregon.

Complete your Americana collection (no cross-country haul required) with Knot & Splice, a new accessories line by School of the Art Institute alum Nicole Jo Melton.

Inspired by a book on Native American beading, the graphic designer by day took a jewelry-making course last winter. By April, she’d graduated from beads to brass and stone, crafting a full cast of earthy earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets cool enough for Janis Joplin and Bobby McGee.

Naming the line for two common steps in the process, Melton also hammers, stamps, and fabricates each brass, bronze, or silver piece to take on a shape of its own. Cuffs and stacking rings appeal to minimalists; U.S.-mined rocks (amethyst from South Carolina, turquoise out of Nevada) contribute color.

Thanks to deft fingers, Melton churns out her designs fast enough to keep prices reasonable. Plus, she’s down to do custom work.

Rock and roll.
