Ten Cheap Thrills Under $10

Because frugality is in fashion

10 for $10!

In some paradise far away, the polar vortex is a slushy coconut cocktail served on the beach. But until we have enough cash to get us there, we’ll be taking advantages of these bargains buys around town.

1. If the god of coffee mated with a spicy Caribbean princess, their heir would be the Ipsento latte at Ipsento Coffee House. The $4 coconut milk, honey, and cayenne concoction is worth every sip.

2. For pretty papers, cards, and local trinkets (like this $8.50 number), head to Greer, a Lincoln Park stationery shop we’ve long been crushing on.

3. Every Tuesday night, toss back some glogg (an $8 cup of hot wine punch mulled with spices, raisins, and almonds) at The Whistler. Live jazz makes it go down even smoother.

4. There’s more to Mexican culture than tacos and bright blankets. Roam the halls of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen to view more than 7,000 pieces of ephemera, textiles, and photography. The cost? There is none.

5. Trenchermen’s Wednesday night bar special hits a high-quality, low-cost note. Get a special burger and a craft beer, plus seasoned popcorn and house-made potato chips, for $10.

10 for $10!

6. What will $2.80 buy you at Eataly? Fresh, homemade bread slathered in Nutella. Got a few more bucks? Coat croissants, muffins, or crepes with the sweet stuff.

7. At The Book Cellar, wines and spines go together. Sip a cabernet sauvignon (all varietals are under $10) while cozying up with a new novel.

8. A week’s worth of free yoga? The new Zen Yoga Garage had us at hello.

9. Sift through spy gear, quirky gadgets, and gizmos aplenty at The Boring Store. All proceeds from the shop’s treasures go to programming at 826Chi, the literacy nonprofit Dave Eggers founded.

10. Pick up tickets (around $10 a pop) for a show at Donny’s Skybox Theatre or de Maat Studio Theatre, the small spaces at Second City used for late-night stand-up and improv.
