Mushroom Mania at River Valley Farmer’s Table

A cafe, market, and wine shop sprouts up in Ravenswood

You’ve dabbled in trippy substances, but shrooms were always off the table.

Reconsider at River Valley Farmer’s Table, a new cafe, market, and wine shop from the founders of the oldest fungi farm in the Midwest.

Chances are you’ve tasted the Burlington, Wisconsin, farm’s fresh produce and jarred goodness (salsas, sauces, an addictive five-cheese garlic spread) at markets around town. Those same pantry staples, plus ravioli, veggie burgers, and tamales, line the shelves at the new Ravenswood space, but it’s the eat-in bites that deserve your full attention.

Sink your teeth into spicy beer-battered mushrooms, a portobello “Italian beef” sandwich, and a veggie version of the mother-in-law; brunch brings bagels topped with smoked shrooms. Soda snobs sip Asian pear and Honeycrisp apple natural sodas, but everyone should save room for lemon pound cake.

Keep the buzz going with a bottle from the soon-to-open wine shop, stocked with 50-plus varieties.

Our heads are already spinning.
