Fly South with Remi Canarie’s Spring Collection

Bayou-inspired fashion from a pair of local up-and-comers

“Swamp Thing” may sound like an insult when it’s hurled your way. But the ladies behind fledgling fashion line Remi Canarie make a strong case for mucking around.

Inspired by New Orleans’s extreme geography (it’s below sea level) and weather (thundershowers, flash floods), Chicago designers Liz Patelski and Lisa Panza’s spring collection faces the elements head on: A mod, translucent rain coat makes a splash, while a buttoned-up trench keeps the goods under wraps.

The SAIC alums have also digitally transferred landscape photos from a summer road trip onto select garments. Waves faintly shimmer across the bottom of a blazer and slit dress, and a field of wild grass stretches across a pair of shorts. Smart color choices — pale blue and bedsheet white with pops of emerald — keep things looking (so) fresh and (so) clean, and crisp tailoring ensures the collection isn’t a wash.

Jump in with a tux jacket dress or collared shirtdresses that toe the androgyny line. Our favorite piece, a bias-cut keyhole sheath, has a classic sportswear silhouette that won’t wilt on the balmiest of nights.

Go ahead — test the waters.

Available at Roam, 1419 North Wells Street, between North Avenue and Schiller Street (312-664-2222 or facebook.com), $290-$835. To see styles, go to remicanarie.com.
