Have a Winning Meal at The Winchester

This East Village cafe is off to a strong start

If it takes a village to raise a child, it can take a neighborhood to open a restaurant.

At least, that’s the story behind The Winchester, a bright cafe in the East Village that quietly debuted two weeks ago. Co-owners Chris Pappas (Sepia) and Dan Sheehy, along with chef Greg Bastian (Tavernita), turned to Kickstarter to pay off the final costs.

Their goal: a sunlit-strewn 74-seater with counter and full service, plus an upstairs private dining space. Sheehy, an experienced builder, set a clean backdrop of neutral colors, constructed wooden tables and metal chairs, and installed an entry wall of plants to create the kind of place that invites you to linger.

Which is exactly what we did on a recent workday (Wi-Fi? check.). Our healthy breakfast of champions: fresh drip coffee and whole grain toast topped with whipped avocados, ruby red grapefruit, and Fresno chili peppers. A just-launched cafe menu includes a smoked trout Caesar salad and classic BLT. Dinner brings arctic char with parsnip puree and bucatini with meatballs. Share any dietary restrictions (meat, dairy, gluten, etc.) or aversions and the kitchen will happily accommodate you.

Like a good neighbor.
