You've Got Maille

Fashion cliché 1249: Everything old is new again.

Duh. Like you haven’t already raided Granny’s closet for this season’s look (all that tweed, vintage brooches, and ladylike skirts).

Okay, smarty, how about digging a little deeper into the past? Like all the way back to medieval times?

The inspiration for Rapt in Maille, a strikingly different kind of jewelry line, comes from chain mail, a pattern of interlocking metal rings that creates a mesh fabric. The stuff was originally worn by knights but is being used to excellent effect in cuff bracelets, chokers, lariats, rings, and dangly earrings. Feminine yet tough (kind of like Grandma), the pieces are all made link by link — some with shimmering glass beads and others with steel.

Caveat emptor: Knight in shining armor not included.

Available at City Soles, 2001 West North Avenue, between Milwaukee and Damen Avenues (773-489-2001) or the Silver Room, 1410 North Milwaukee Avenue, between Evergreen and Wolcott Avenues (773-278-7130). To see styles, go to raptinmaille.com.
