Belle du Jour

Vintage can be tricky.

Sure, it’s stylish and all. But after a day spent sifting through the dusty, mothball-scented dreck at the Salvation Army, you look more Baby Jane than Babe Paley.

Skip the rummaging and zip up to Lulu’s at the Belle Kay, a haven for vintage frocks and accessories. The intimate boutique, which is fashioned after a chic ’40s-era salon, traffics in a rare breed of Old Hollywood glamour: killer gowns by Pauline Trigere, sleek cinched-waist suits by Lilli Ann, and runway-worthy crinoline skirts from the ’50s.

But accessories are Lulu’s real forte: a mink poncho with sable tails, impossible-to-find Bes Ben hats (the painfully chic Duchess of Windsor was a fan), and signed Eisenberg brooches from the ’40s. It’s the kind off stuff that puts ready-to-wear to shame — and leaves ordinary vintage in the dust.

And you, delightfully dust-free.
