Department of Defense

We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming for an important message from everyone’s favorite superhero, SafetyGirl. (GIRL … Girl … girl.)

Salutations, Chicagoans. SafetyGirl here. And have I got a tip for you. As you can see, I’ve traded in my cape, tights, and mace for more fashionable heels, halter, and handbag.

But my fab ensemble won’t compromise my crime-fighting abilities. I’ve just discovered Wing Tsun, the female-friendly martial art that was created almost 400 years ago by a Chinese nun who had invaders and adversaries to battle. This self-defense system doesn’t rely on strength (which the sister didn’t have) but teaches you how to utilize your opponent’s energy to help you kick ass.

The actual sparring looks more like a dance than a fight. (That’s what makes it fashion-proof.) The principles are based on relaxation and speed rather than force and strength. So practicing the moves won’t bulk you up but will leave you FIT!, TRIM!, and FIERCE!

Talk about superpowers.

For more information about Wing Tsun contact Ingo Weigel (312-498-1982 or chicagoselfdefense.com). Classes available at Sharper Fitness Gym, 401 West Ontario Street, between Orleans and Kingsbury Streets.
