To find emerging artists selling their works for cheap, you have to:
a) travel to Montmartre.
b) hold your breath ’til next summer’s fairs.
c) lift a few rocks and look underneath.
d) shop at Sacred Art.
Perfect score for all “d” answers. (Montmartre hasn’t seen a real artist in 100 years.)
Sacred Art, which just opened in Roscoe Village, sells works by 30 Chicago artists — with an average per-piece damage of about $75. Owner Sarah Seyedin trumpets up-and-comers with a constantly rotating collection of paintings, photography, and sculpture, including Elizabeth Walker’s works of art on vintage aprons and Michelle May’s black-and-white figure-study photos.
The vibe is as low-key as the pricing. Well-worn hardwood floors and Seyedin’s whippet/Lab, Gracie, make things homey. Stop by Tuesdays, when artists drop in to show Seyedin work that just might end up on the wall one day.
How’s that for extra credit?
