You play the lottery, dabble in online poker, and even wagered on American Idol. (McPheever? What were you thinking?)
But you can’t remember the last time you got really lucky.
Tokyo 21, which opens tomorrow in the old J.P. Chicago spot, hopes to change that. The restaurant’s design motif is all about Asian good fortune, from pachinko machines (part slot machine, part pinball) and Japanese lucky cats (those white ceramic felines you see at every sushi bar) to Chinese fortune-telling cards on the walls.
There’s no risk when it comes to the food either, which is an assortment of Korean (marinated short ribs with shiitake rice), Chinese (shrimp-and-enoki-filled spring rolls), and Japanese (Sapporo-braised ribs and Osaka-style block sushi) cuisines. Odds get even better when you discover that the team behind Tokyo 21 is from the Kamehachi restaurant empire.
The bar evokes a downtown Tokyo streetscape. The main dining room is romantic. The sushi bar in the back is, well, a sushi bar in the back. There’s something for everyone, including you.
Which is what we like to call a win-win situation.
Tokyo 21, 901 West Weed Street, at North Avenue (312-337-2001).
