Summer.
The time of year when the jing-a-ling of the Good Humor truck sets you off like a shot. One Rocket Pop later and all you’ve got to show are blue lips, a wooden stick, and neighborhood kids complaining about the adult who pushed his way to the head of the line.
Now there’s a more dignified way to get your frozen fix. No bells attached. Head to the recently opened Ventrella’s Caffe in Ravenswood, where gelato is yours for the taking.
One foot in the door and you’ll feel like you’ve gone back to the old neighborhood: carved-wood counters, wall-to-wall chrome, tin ceilings, and friendly banter courtesy of owner James Ventrella.
With traditional flavors like stracciatella (Italia’s version of chocolate chip), nocciola (hazelnut), and a pistachio that will knock your calze off, you’ll be hard-pressed to choose just one. The menu also includes paninis, Nutella French toast, and Italian coffee drinks for days when the weather calls for something a little less icy.
As for your neighbors?
Hopefully, they’ll warm up all on their own.
