A Makeover Story

Cafe Mediterra

After one too many episodes of The Swan, you covered your mirrors and lost the remote.

You love makeover stories — but you can do without those that cause incessant Googling of “saggy ankles.”

For a story about enhancement that won’t leave you listless, head to Cafe Mediterra, a Middle Eastern eatery in Printers Row that recently underwent a transformation of its own.

What was once Gourmand is now a punchy cafe with a new look and grub to match. Chef/owner Mutaz Abdullah gutted and remodeled the space, creating a menu that fuses ethnic and American dishes.

Try hash browns and a latte for an All-American breakfast. Go Greek at lunchtime with mini spiced lamb burgers, falafel, or steak sandwiches. Mix it up at dinner — kebabs followed by cheesecake. And what’s a Middle Eastern joint without hummus? Abdullah’s concoction comes from an old family recipe and is healthy to boot.

So you can partake in a makeover.

Without going under the knife.

Cafe Mediterra, 728 South Dearborn Street, between Harrison and Polk Street (312-427-2610).

BYOB, Coffee Klatch, Counter Service, Greek, Hangout, Hangover Cure, Wi-Fi
